Volkswagen India had recently introduced its Ameo to the very popular and increasingly crowded compact sedan segment of the country. The new Volkswagen Ameo compact sedan was introduced in India ahead of the 2016 Indian Auto Expo back in February. The German car major opened bookings for the car on 12th of May, and then finally commenced the deliveries of the car from 25th July onwards. The Ameo has been loaded very attractively and also priced competitively with a starting tag of Rs. Rs 5.24 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The Volkswagen Ameo is a very special car, and the buzz around it is justified, although only time will tell if the car is a major success or not in India. To begin with, the Ameo sub-4 meter compact sedan is the first India specific model to have come from the house of a German car maker, while also being Volkswagen India’s first compact sedan model. The car fights in a pretty crowded Indian segment of compact sedans, where there are many newer and capable models, but is still ultimately ruled by the considerably older Maruti Suzuki DZire. In the Indian car market, the new Ameo fights with the very popular Maruti Suzuki DZire, Tata Zest, Hyundai Xcent, Ford Figo Aspire and Honda Amaze. That’s why Volkswagen tried to make the Ameo different than the others, so that it stands apart from the crowd for its qualities. Well, the Ameo is no doubt a great car in terms of overall quality and features, but what is most remarkable about it is its high safety quotient.
It is a well known fact that Indian cars are very poor in terms of safety. Be it built quality, platform, or safety equipments, India cars have been criticized for safety issues. Some of the most popular car models in the Indian mass market are some of worst cars when safety is concerned. The Volkswagen Ameo is a stark contrast to this scenario and is marked by its superior safety measures. While we shall have a more detailed look at the safety aspect of the car, let us first take a look at the car itself.
The new Volkswagen Ameo comes with neat and smart looks that is very similar to the Polo’s and is laden with great features to make it a high value for money prospect. The car boasts of a number of first in segment equipments and class leading features as well to allure the modern Indian car buyers. As top-notch safety is patent to Volkswagen cars, the Ameo is no different and comes with amazing safety features. Volkswagen is perhaps the only car major in the Indian mass market which did not deviate from its paramount importance to safety.
Design & Built
The Ameo is essentially the Volkswagen Polo hatchback derived compact sedan model, like most of its hatchback based rivals in its own segment. It is very similar to the Polo and the larger Vento sedan in terms of looks and overall quality. It is good to mention that both Polo and Vento are praised for their superb quality in their respective segments, thus the Ameo is sturdy and good looking car that one can’t go wrong with. Being a sub-4 meter model, the new Volkswagen Ameo is eligible for tax benefits in India and is a considerably affordable model. Volkswagen currently offers only the petrol form of the Ameo, while the diesel version is also on the cards.
Some of the noteworthy exterior features of the Volkswagen Ameo include stylish front grille, large stylized headlights, chrome finished door handles, body colored bumpers, blacked-out pillars, attractively designed tail lights, rear antennae and stylish new 15-inch alloy wheels.
Cabin Design & Features
The new Volkswagen Ameo gain gets very similarly designed cabin that is reminiscent of the Polo. This is something good of course, as the car offers good interior space, high quality cabin materials and great fit and finish. All these mean that the cockpit of the Ameo is amicably premium and sophisticatedly stylish. The cabin is done very neatly and everything exudes a premium appeal.
When it comes to features, the Volkswagen Ameo is best in its class feature-rich car model. Its feature list includes Black & Beige dual-tone interior color scheme, touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, dust and pollen filter for Air Conditioning, Rear AC vent, steering wheel mounted controls, Faux Silver trim, flat bottomed steering wheel, all power windows, Central Armrest for front passengers, Remote Boot and Fuel Lid Opener, Auto-dimming Internal Rear View Mirror, Rear Headrests and central locking system.
Powertrain & Mileage
The Volkswagen Ameo compact sedan is currently powered by only a 1.2 liter 3 cylinder MPI petrol motor, while the company will also launch the diesel avatar of the Ameo that will get powered by 1.5 liter 4 cylinder TDI diesel mill. The Ameo diesel is expected to come in around the upcoming festive season this year, as the testing of the vehicle has already started.
The 1.2-liter petrol motor gets paired to a 5 speed manual transmission gearbox, which will also equip the upcoming diesel version as a standard transmission. However, the diesel engine will also get a sophisticated 7 speed DSG transmission which will be a first in segment feature.
The Ameo petrol version delivers a fuel efficiency of 17.83 km per liter while the sedan’s diesel counterpart is expected to offer a fuel economy of around 21 km per liter.
